Where to Stay in Cape Verde: Best Islands, Towns & Areas

Choosing where to stay in Cape Verde is not only about choosing the right island.

Two travellers can visit the same island and have very different experiences depending on where they stay. A beachfront resort can be perfect for a week of relaxation, but inconvenient if you want to explore independently. A small town in the mountains can put hiking trails on your doorstep, but may not suit someone looking for restaurants and nightlife every evening.

The island defines part of the trip. Your base determines how easily you can actually experience it.

Location affects how much time you spend travelling each day, whether you can walk to restaurants in the evening, how early you can start a hike, how dependent you are on transfers and whether your accommodation becomes part of the holiday or simply somewhere to sleep.

This guide compares the main places to stay on Sal, Boa Vista, São Vicente, Santo Antão, Santiago and Fogo, looking at what each base is best for, the compromises involved and some of the accommodation options our local team works with.

If you are still deciding which islands to include in your trip, start with our guide to Which Cape Verde Island Should You Visit?

There is rarely one universally best place to stay. The strongest choice depends on what you want to do, how much you intend to move around and how you prefer to travel.

Where to stay in Sal

Santa Maria: the easiest base for most travellers

For a first visit to Sal, Santa Maria is usually the most practical place to stay.

It combines one of the island’s main beaches with restaurants, cafés, shops, water sports and tour departures, making it possible to enjoy much of the holiday without arranging transport every time you leave your accommodation.

That convenience matters more than it may appear when comparing hotels online.

If your ideal holiday involves spending part of the day on the beach, going out for dinner in the evening and joining an excursion or water activity on another day, Santa Maria keeps all of those options close together.

It is also a good choice for travellers who prefer some independence and want to move between the beach, town and hotel during the day.

Santa Maria is, however, Sal’s main tourism centre. Travellers looking for greater isolation, a quieter setting or a holiday centred almost entirely around a large resort may prefer accommodation farther from town.

Places we work with in Sal

Hotel Morabeza suits travellers who want direct access to Santa Maria’s beach while remaining close to the centre of town.

Its position gives guests the freedom to enjoy the facilities of a resort-style property without giving up the ability to walk into Santa Maria for restaurants, shops or an evening outside the hotel.

That combination can be valuable for couples and families who want a comfortable hotel but do not want every meal and activity to take place inside it.

Hilton Cabo Verde Sal Resort offers a larger international-resort experience in the Santa Maria area.

It is better suited to travellers who place more value on extensive hotel facilities while still wanting access to the town and its surroundings.

Both properties illustrate an important advantage of staying around Santa Maria: you can enjoy the beach and hotel facilities without necessarily isolating yourself from the rest of the destination.

Where to stay in Boa Vista

Boa Vista presents a clearer divide between two styles of holiday.

You can stay in Sal Rei, with restaurants, streets and local life nearby, or choose one of the larger beach resorts where most of the holiday takes place within the property and its immediate surroundings.

The location has a noticeable effect on how you experience the island.

Sal Rei: better for independent travellers

Stay in Sal Rei if you want restaurants, local streets and everyday town life within easy reach.

It suits travellers who enjoy leaving the hotel in the evening, choosing where to eat, walking around town and having more independence during their stay.

Sal Rei is also a practical base for excursions around Boa Vista. Your accommodation functions as a starting point for exploring the island, with the town providing services and options when you return.

Ouril Hotel Águeda is one of the properties our team works with in Sal Rei and fits this type of itinerary well.

For travellers who enjoy combining beach time with a degree of independence, staying in town can provide more variety over several days.

Beach resorts: when the hotel is a major part of the holiday

Boa Vista also has large resorts located away from the centre of Sal Rei.

They suit a different kind of trip.

If your priorities are the beach, swimming pools, relaxation, organised entertainment and an all-inclusive environment, being outside town may matter very little. The hotel itself provides much of what you need during the stay.

Hotel Riu Palace Boavista is one of the properties our team uses for travellers looking for this style of holiday.

A resort stay also does not prevent you from exploring Boa Vista. Excursions can still take you to dunes, beaches, villages and other parts of the island. The difference is that during the rest of the day, the resort becomes the centre of the experience.

Sal Rei gives you easier access to the town. A resort gives you more facilities concentrated in one place.

The better fit depends on how much of your holiday you expect to spend outside the hotel.

Where to stay in São Vicente

Mindelo: the natural base for exploring the island

For São Vicente, Mindelo is the obvious base for the great majority of visitors.

The city is the island’s cultural and practical centre, with restaurants, markets, cafés, music venues and the largest concentration of services.

It also gives travellers a useful starting point for exploring the rest of São Vicente.

From Mindelo, you can visit places such as São Pedro, Monte Verde, Baía das Gatas, Praia Grande, Salamansa and Calhau without needing to change accommodation every night.

That combination of city life and access to the wider island is one of São Vicente’s strengths.

You can spend one day exploring landscapes and beaches, return to Mindelo in the afternoon and still have restaurants and music within reach in the evening.

Mindelo is also the gateway to Santo Antão. Travellers combining the two islands normally pass through São Vicente and continue by ferry, so staying in the city before or after Santo Antão fits naturally into many multi-island itineraries.

Ferry schedules can change, and the final connection should always be checked when the trip is planned.

Where we stay in Mindelo

Kira’s Boutique Hotel is one of the properties used by our team.

It offers a smaller, more personal style of accommodation than a large resort and is well suited to travellers who want to experience Mindelo itself.

For this kind of city stay, location carries considerable weight.

Being able to leave the hotel on foot for dinner, explore the centre, reach cafés and move around without organising transfers for every small journey can make the stay considerably easier.

On São Vicente, we would normally give that access to Mindelo greater weight than a long list of resort facilities, unless the traveller has a specific reason to stay elsewhere.

Where to stay in Santo Antão

Santo Antão is the island where the choice of base can influence the itinerary most strongly.

The island is mountainous, travel times can be significant and many visits are built around hiking routes spread across different valleys and settlements.

A hotel that looks relatively close on a map may still involve a substantial journey along mountain roads.

For that reason, accommodation planning should follow the walks and areas you want to explore.

Paúl: stay close to one of Santo Antão’s best-known valleys

The Paúl Valley is an excellent base for travellers whose priority is hiking through green agricultural landscapes.

Staying in or near the valley means waking up already inside the scenery that brings many travellers to Santo Antão.

Terraced fields, tropical vegetation, mountain slopes and small settlements form part of the walking environment, so the journey to the trail is reduced and the landscape becomes part of the stay itself.

Paúl suits travellers who are less interested in nightlife or urban facilities and more interested in walking, local life and a slower rhythm.

It can be especially attractive when several of the planned walks are concentrated around the valley and the northeastern part of the island.

Ponta do Sol: coastal atmosphere and access to northern walks

Ponta do Sol offers a different experience.

The small coastal town is a useful base for exploring the northern part of Santo Antão and is popular with hikers.

After spending the day walking through the mountains or along the coast, you return to a compact settlement by the sea with restaurants and a small-town atmosphere.

The Tiduca Hotel, which our team works with, is located in Ponta do Sol facing the fishing harbour.

Its setting suits travellers who want a defined town base at the beginning and end of each hiking day.

Ponta do Sol is also associated with some of Santo Antão’s most memorable coastal scenery, so it can fit particularly well into itineraries focused on the north of the island.

Ribeira Grande: a practical hub

Ribeira Grande provides more flexibility when the walking programme covers several nearby areas.

Its position gives relatively convenient access to different parts of northern Santo Antão, including the valleys of Ribeira Grande and Ribeira da Torre, while Ponta do Sol is also nearby.

This centrality can reduce unnecessary movement when several walks start in different locations.

Ribeira Grande also has more of the practical character of a working town, which some travellers appreciate between days in more rural landscapes.

It is particularly useful when the itinerary does not revolve around a single valley.

Pedracin Village: a more rural Santo Antão experience

Pedracin Village is another property our team uses and represents another side of staying on Santo Antão.

Here, the attraction is the more rural environment and the feeling of being surrounded by the island’s mountain landscape.

For travellers coming to Santo Antão primarily to walk, the setting can matter as much as the facilities of the accommodation itself.

After several hours on the trails, staying somewhere connected to the landscape can extend the experience beyond the hiking route.

Should you stay in more than one place in Santo Antão?

For hiking-focused itineraries, often yes.

Moving accommodation once can save repeated journeys across the island and place you closer to the starting point of different walks.

A traveller might spend part of the stay around Paúl or Ribeira Grande and another part farther north or in a different valley, depending on the route.

This is particularly useful when consecutive hiking days begin in different areas.

On Santo Antão, the geography of the walking programme should therefore play a direct role in where each night is spent.

Where to stay in Santiago

Santiago is large and varied enough that choosing the wrong base can create unnecessary driving.

The island combines Praia, Cidade Velha, mountain regions, inland towns, villages and the beaches of the north. Trying to experience all of them from a single hotel can mean spending more time on the road than necessary.

For many itineraries, the most useful comparison is Praia and Tarrafal.

Praia: best for the capital, history and the south

Praia is the practical choice when the itinerary focuses on the capital, Cidade Velha and southern or central Santiago.

Staying here gives you access to the island’s largest city, restaurants, markets and services while also providing a base for excursions.

It is particularly convenient at the beginning or end of a Santiago stay because the international airport is nearby.

From Praia, travellers can explore the Plateau, visit Cidade Velha, travel into the interior or continue north as part of a longer route through the island.

Pestana Trópico, one of the hotels our team works with, combines access to Praia with an oceanfront setting.

It can suit travellers who want the practical advantages of staying in the capital without choosing a hotel deep inside the busiest part of the city.

Tarrafal: best when the north and the beach matter more

If the itinerary is centred on northern Santiago, Tarrafal becomes the more convenient base.

The town provides access to one of Santiago’s best-known beach areas and places travellers closer to the communities and landscapes of the north.

That change in geography also changes the rhythm of the trip.

After time spent exploring Praia, historical sites, markets, mountain roads and inland communities, Tarrafal can provide several slower days beside the sea.

King Fisher Village is one of the properties our team uses in Tarrafal.

Its coastal location makes it particularly appropriate for travellers who want to combine northern Santiago with time beside the ocean.

Praia and Tarrafal can work together

A trip covering both southern and northern Santiago often benefits from dividing the stay.

A few nights in Praia provide easy access to the capital, Cidade Velha and the south. Moving north later allows travellers to explore that part of Santiago without repeatedly crossing much of the island.

The result is less driving and more time in the places the itinerary was designed to include.

For travellers spending enough time on Santiago, this can be considerably more comfortable than returning to the same hotel after every excursion.

Where to stay in Fogo

Fogo presents one of the clearest location choices in Cape Verde: São Filipe and Chã das Caldeiras offer two very different ways of experiencing the island.

For many itineraries, the two complement each other.

São Filipe: the best all-round base

For a first visit to Fogo, São Filipe is usually the most flexible base.

It is the island’s main town and provides restaurants, services and a distinctive historic centre while giving travellers access to other parts of Fogo.

São Filipe itself is worth experiencing, particularly its traditional architecture, cobbled streets and views towards the sea and neighbouring Brava.

From here, an itinerary can combine the volcano with villages, coastal areas, agricultural landscapes and the town itself.

Casa Colonial Koenig, which our local team works with, is located in the historic centre of São Filipe and occupies a traditional sobrado.

This style of accommodation fits well with travellers who want the stay itself to reflect some of Fogo’s architectural character.

Using São Filipe as a base also gives greater flexibility if the itinerary includes more than the volcano.

Chã das Caldeiras: stay inside the volcanic landscape

For travellers whose main reason for visiting Fogo is the volcano, spending a night in Chã das Caldeiras creates a completely different experience.

You stay inside the caldera, surrounded by the volcanic landscape and much closer to the starting points of the main walks.

The value of staying here is primarily geographical and experiential.

You can wake up inside the landscape you came to explore, begin hiking earlier and experience the caldera after many day visitors have left.

Accommodation is generally simpler than in São Filipe, but that is part of the nature of the stay.

For many travellers, combining São Filipe with Chã das Caldeiras produces the most complete Fogo itinerary.

São Filipe provides the town, services and access to the wider island. Chã das Caldeiras provides immersion in the volcanic landscape.

Where to stay in Cape Verde? 10 places to stay that our local team works with

The properties below are not a ranking of the “10 best hotels in Cape Verde”.

They are accommodation options Cabo Verde Trip works with, spread across several islands and representing different styles of stay.

  1. Hotel Morabeza, Santa Maria, Sal
A beach-oriented stay with easy access to Santa Maria and the freedom to move between the hotel and town.
  2. Hilton Cabo Verde Sal Resort, Santa Maria, Sal
A larger resort experience for travellers who value extensive facilities while remaining close to Santa Maria.
  3. Ouril Hotel Águeda, Sal Rei, Boa Vista
A useful option for travellers who want to stay in town and explore Boa Vista more independently.
  4. Hotel Riu Palace Boavista, Boa Vista
Better suited to a holiday centred on beach, resort facilities and an all-inclusive environment.
  5. Kira’s Boutique Hotel, Mindelo, São Vicente
A smaller boutique property for travellers who want to experience Mindelo and explore the city on foot.
  6. Pedracin Village, Santo Antão
A more rural stay surrounded by the landscapes that define a hiking trip on Santo Antão.
  7. Tiduca Hotel, Ponta do Sol, Santo Antão
A coastal base in northern Santo Antão, well placed for travellers combining hiking with time in Ponta do Sol.
  8. Pestana Trópico, Praia, Santiago
A practical base for Praia, Cidade Velha and southern Santiago, with an oceanfront setting.
  9. King Fisher Village, Tarrafal, Santiago
A coastal option for travellers spending part of their Santiago itinerary in the north.
  10. Casa Colonial Koenig, São Filipe, Fogo
A historic-style stay in São Filipe for travellers who want to experience both the town and the wider island.

Which property fits best depends on the structure of the itinerary.

A traveller spending most days hiking needs a different base from someone planning a week of beaches and water sports. Someone who enjoys walking to restaurants in the evening may value location more than extensive hotel facilities. A family planning an all-inclusive beach holiday may make exactly the opposite choice.

Accommodation is therefore one part of the itinerary, not an isolated booking decision.

Where to stay in Cape Verde? One island or several?

Choosing where to stay becomes even more important when a Cape Verde trip includes several islands.

Moving between islands adds another layer to the itinerary: flights or ferries, transfer times, departure schedules and the location of each hotel all affect how smoothly the journey works.

A route that looks simple on a map may involve an inconvenient connection or unnecessary backtracking.

The number of nights allocated to each island also matters.

Arriving late in the day, changing islands after only one full day and spending several hours moving between ports, airports and hotels can make an itinerary feel far more rushed than the number of nights initially suggests.

Where possible, bases should therefore be planned together with the inter-island route.

Mindelo fits naturally before or after Santo Antão because of the ferry connection. A stay in Praia can work well around flights involving Santiago. São Filipe and Chã das Caldeiras can be combined within Fogo without turning the entire island into a series of day trips.

Our guide to Island Hopping in Cape Verde explains how the islands connect and what to consider when planning a multi-island itinerary.

So, where should you stay in Cape Verde?

The best base changes with the shape of the trip.

For beaches, restaurants and convenience on Sal, Santa Maria is usually the strongest option.

On Boa Vista, Sal Rei provides more independence and access to town life, while the island’s larger resorts suit travellers who want the hotel and beach to form the centre of the holiday.

For culture, restaurants and exploring São Vicente, Mindelo is the natural base.

On Santo Antão, Paúl, Ponta do Sol and Ribeira Grande each work for different hiking programmes, and a longer walking itinerary may justify using more than one base.

On Santiago, Praia gives easier access to the capital, Cidade Velha and the south, while Tarrafal is better positioned for the north and for adding beach time to the trip.

On Fogo, São Filipe provides flexibility and access to the wider island, while Chã das Caldeiras places you directly inside the volcanic landscape.

Location does not need to be perfect on paper.

It needs to support the days you actually want to have.
