São Vicente is relatively simple to organise from one base. For most first-time visitors, that base is Mindelo, with the rest of the island explored on day trips.
Two days allow time for the city and a wider island circuit. Three give more room for beach, culture, music or an evening in Mindelo without compressing the following day.
The island also combines easily with Santo Antão. The ferry between Mindelo and Porto Novo takes around 40 minutes on current services, so travellers can move quickly from São Vicente’s urban and coastal setting to the mountain landscapes of its neighbouring island.
If hiking is an important part of the trip, allow Santo Antão its own stay. A week split between the two islands gives considerably more freedom than trying to see Santo Antão between morning and evening ferries.

São Vicente is compact, and distances rarely require changing accommodation.
Mindelo concentrates most of the island’s restaurants, cultural venues, commercial activity and transport services. Outside the city, the landscape opens into dry valleys, volcanic terrain, fishing settlements and beaches.
That geography allows a simple itinerary: settle in Mindelo, explore the city on foot, then use a second day to travel around the island.

How Many Days Do You Need in São Vicente?
One Day
A short Mindelo visit can fit between arrival and an onward connection to Santo Antão.
Several hours are enough to walk through the historic centre, see the waterfront, visit a market and have a meal in the city. There will be little time left for the rest of São Vicente.
Travellers who want to experience the island itself should allow another day for the coast, Monte Verde and the communities outside Mindelo.
Two Days
Two days are a useful minimum for a first visit.
A straightforward plan is:
Day 1: Mindelo
Day 2: island circuit
The second day can include several locations outside the city without long transfers or a change of accommodation.
This allocation suits travellers continuing to Santo Antão and keeps the São Vicente portion of the trip compact.
Three Days
Three days give São Vicente more breathing room.
One day can be dedicated to Mindelo, another to the wider island, leaving the third for beach time, a museum, watersports, an unhurried lunch or an evening that does not have to end early because of the next morning’s schedule.
For many first-time visitors, this is a comfortable amount of time.
São Vicente’s appeal is tied partly to the pace and cultural life of Mindelo. Filling every available hour with driving would miss an important part of the island.
Four Days or More
A longer stay suits travellers whose plans include a specific activity or a slower rhythm.
Extra days can be used for:
- beach time;
- windsurfing or kitesurfing;
- hiking;
- music and nightlife;
- festivals and cultural events;
- a slower stay in Mindelo;
- additional time before or after Santo Antão.
The main sights do not require a long stay by themselves. Additional days are most useful when they support something you genuinely want to do.
Where to Stay in São Vicente
Mindelo
Mindelo is the practical default for a first stay.
The city gives easy access to restaurants, markets, the historic centre, cultural venues and the ferry terminal for Santo Antão.
It is also convenient for:
- airport transfers;
- arranging taxis or tours;
- evenings out;
- eating without organising transport;
- walking between several places of interest;
- continuing by ferry to Porto Novo.
Much of central Mindelo can be explored on foot.
For a two- or three-day visit, staying here keeps logistics light and leaves more time for the island itself.
Laginha
Laginha offers easy access to the beach while remaining close to central Mindelo.
It is a useful option for travellers who want to spend part of each day near the sea without moving to an isolated coastal base.
The beach can also be visited from central Mindelo, so staying in Laginha is a preference rather than a logistical requirement.
Staying Outside Mindelo
São Pedro, Calhau, Baía das Gatas and other coastal areas can suit longer stays focused on quiet, beach or watersports.
They require more planning for meals, evenings and transport into Mindelo.
For a short first visit, the city remains the easier base. Accommodation outside Mindelo becomes more attractive when the location itself supports the purpose of the trip.
How to Get to São Vicente
São Vicente is served by Cesária Évora International Airport, near São Pedro, roughly five kilometres southwest of central Mindelo.
The airport handles both domestic and international traffic.
Routes and frequencies can change, so transport planning should be based on the connections available for the actual travel dates rather than on schedules found months in advance.
The transfer between the airport and Mindelo is short, which makes the city convenient even for travellers arriving later in the day.
São Vicente can also be reached by sea.
For most visitors, the most relevant maritime connection is the ferry between Mindelo and Porto Novo on Santo Antão.
Current published services take around 40 minutes for the crossing. Departure times can vary, so they should be checked again close to the journey.
When building a multi-island itinerary, leave some margin around flights and ferry connections. A plan with every transfer dependent on the previous one arriving exactly on time is unnecessarily fragile.
Getting Around São Vicente
A rental car is optional for a typical first visit.
Walking in Mindelo
Central Mindelo is compact enough for many journeys on foot.
The historic centre, waterfront, restaurants, markets and several cultural venues can be combined comfortably during the same day.
Walking also gives more context to the city than moving between individual sights by car.
Taxis and Private Transport
Taxis are one of the easiest ways to reach places outside Mindelo.
They are useful for:
- airport transfers;
- Monte Verde;
- Baía das Gatas;
- São Pedro;
- Calhau;
- island circuits;
- journeys tied to a fixed schedule.
A driver can also connect several locations during the same day without requiring the traveller to manage individual transport legs.
Collective Transport
Shared transport connects Mindelo with other settlements.
It can be economical when time is flexible and the route fits the day’s plan.
On a short trip, transport chosen around the traveller’s schedule often allows more of the island to be seen in the available time.
Rental Car
Hiring a car gives independence and can suit travellers who prefer to explore at their own pace.
For a stay based in Mindelo with one day outside the city, it is rarely essential. A taxi or arranged island circuit can remove the practical tasks of collection, parking and returning the vehicle.
Give Mindelo Enough Time
Mindelo gives São Vicente a substantial urban and cultural centre around which much of the island’s travel planning revolves.
The city developed rapidly from the middle of the nineteenth century as Porto Grande became an important Atlantic harbour. English coal companies established operations there to supply international shipping, strengthening Mindelo’s links with maritime trade and movement between countries.
Those connections are still visible in the city’s layout, architecture and relationship with its harbour.
The historic centre, commonly known as Morada, was classified as National Heritage in 2012.
A visit can include streets and squares in the historic centre, the waterfront, markets and cultural spaces without needing a tightly sequenced itinerary.
Mindelo is also closely associated with Cesária Évora. A museum space dedicated to the singer preserves photographs, recordings, clothing, personal objects and audiovisual material connected with her career.
Her story is one route into São Vicente’s musical culture, though the city’s music scene extends well beyond a single artist.
Keep at least part of an evening free if your schedule allows it. Music, restaurants and city life are easier to appreciate when Mindelo is treated as somewhere to spend time rather than only as the place where the hotel and ferry terminal happen to be.
Exploring São Vicente Beyond Mindelo
The landscape changes quickly outside the city.
São Vicente is dry and open, with volcanic terrain, fishing communities and long coastal views. Most of the main stops can be combined within a single day.
Monte Verde
At 774 metres, Monte Verde is the highest point on São Vicente.
Its elevation provides broad views across the island when visibility is good and helps put the geography of Mindelo, the surrounding coast and the dry interior into perspective.
It fits naturally into an island circuit.
Baía das Gatas
Baía das Gatas is one of São Vicente’s best-known coastal areas.
It is used for swimming and recreation and is also associated with the annual music festival held there.
The bay can be combined with other northern and eastern stops without dedicating a full day to it.
Salamansa
Salamansa is a fishing community on the north coast.
Its beach and windy coastal setting also attract watersports visitors.
It can be included on the same wider circuit as Baía das Gatas and other northern parts of the island.
Calhau
Calhau lies on the eastern coast in a dry volcanic landscape.
The route towards it gives a clear sense of how sparse São Vicente becomes away from Mindelo.
São Pedro
São Pedro sits on the southwest coast near the airport.
Its bay, fishing community and water activities make it relevant to travellers interested in the coast, while its position can sometimes be useful on an arrival or departure day.
A dedicated Things to Do in São Vicente Beyond Mindelo guide can go further into route sequencing, activities and how much time to spend at each stop.
How Much Beach Time Should You Plan?
Beach time can be added to a São Vicente itinerary without turning the entire visit into a beach holiday.
Laginha is the easiest beach to combine with a day in Mindelo. A traveller can spend a few hours there and return to the city without organising a separate excursion.
Baía das Gatas fits naturally into an island circuit and can provide a swimming stop during a broader day of exploration.
São Pedro, Salamansa and Calhau are more closely tied to their surrounding coastal areas and to specific activities.
A full day reserved only for the beach is therefore optional. It becomes more relevant when swimming, rest or watersports are among the main reasons for visiting São Vicente.
Music, Carnival and the Baía das Gatas Festival
São Vicente has one of Cape Verde’s strongest concentrations of music and cultural events.
For travellers coming specifically for an event, the calendar can determine the entire trip.
Mindelo Carnival
Mindelo’s Carnival is one of the city’s major annual celebrations.
The date changes each year because it follows the Carnival calendar.
Accommodation demand rises around the event, so travellers planning around Carnival should confirm dates and arrange their stay early.
Baía das Gatas Festival
The Baía das Gatas music festival takes place in August, traditionally around the period of the full moon.
It draws visitors from other islands and from abroad and can significantly increase demand for accommodation and transport.
Anyone travelling specifically for the festival should check the dates announced for that year before booking flights.
Music During the Rest of the Year
A major festival is not required to encounter music in Mindelo.
Live performances and nightlife are part of the city’s regular cultural life.
Leaving some flexibility in the evening schedule gives more opportunity to enjoy that side of São Vicente without trying to predict every venue before arrival.
When Is the Best Time to Visit São Vicente?
São Vicente can be visited throughout the year.
Cape Verde has a generally dry climate, with the driest period covering much of the year and the greater chance of rainfall concentrated mainly between August and October.
Rain remains irregular, and São Vicente is a dry island overall.
For General Sightseeing
Most months can be used for exploring Mindelo and travelling around the island.
Travellers looking for consistently dry conditions tend to favour the long dry season.
For Watersports
Wind is a more important factor.
Cape Verde’s stronger trade winds tend to affect the period from roughly autumn through spring, although actual conditions vary by location and activity.
Anyone travelling specifically for windsurfing or kitesurfing should check the appropriate season and local conditions for the chosen spot.
For Events
Festival dates take priority over climate averages.
Carnival and Baía das Gatas can both justify travelling during a particular week rather than selecting dates according to weather alone.
Combining São Vicente and Santo Antão
São Vicente and Santo Antão form one of the easiest two-island combinations in Cape Verde.
The ferry from Mindelo to Porto Novo currently takes around 40 minutes, but the experience changes quickly after arrival.
Mindelo provides an urban base with restaurants, music, cultural life and simple transport connections.
Santo Antão requires more time for valleys, villages, mountain roads and hiking.
For a one-week trip, a useful allocation is:
2–3 days in São Vicente
4–5 days in Santo Antão
That gives both islands enough room without creating a schedule dominated by movement.
Visiting Santo Antão for One Day
A day trip from São Vicente can provide an introduction to Santo Antão.
It is most suitable for travellers who have limited time and are planning a road-based visit rather than a serious hiking programme.
Anyone travelling to Cape Verde because of Santo Antão’s mountains should stay overnight.
Several nights allow earlier trail starts, longer routes and travel through the valleys without designing the day around the return ferry.
See our Santo Antão Travel Guide for detailed planning advice.
How São Vicente Fits into a Longer Cape Verde Trip
São Vicente and Santo Antão
This pairing requires little additional travel planning once the ferry connection is confirmed.
A traveller can move from Mindelo to Santo Antão quickly while experiencing two islands with distinct geography and rhythms.
São Vicente and Sal
Combining São Vicente with Sal brings more beach and resort infrastructure into the trip.
The connection between the islands should be checked against actual domestic flight availability before fixing the itinerary.
São Vicente and Santiago
São Vicente and Santiago provide two strong urban and cultural components within the same trip.
Santiago also adds Cidade Velha, larger rural areas and a broader range of landscapes around the capital.
Transport between the islands becomes the main planning consideration.
São Vicente in a Multi-Island Itinerary
Adding islands increases the amount of time lost to packing, airport or port transfers, waiting and schedule constraints.
With seven days, São Vicente and Santo Antão already provide enough variety for a complete trip.
Ten or fourteen days allow São Vicente to fit more comfortably alongside one or two additional islands.
The number of islands should follow the time available rather than become a target in itself.
Planning São Vicente in Practice
For a first trip, Mindelo is the easiest base.
Allow one day to explore the city and another for the wider island. A third day is useful when you want more beach time, music, a cultural event or a slower pace.
Transport around São Vicente can remain simple: walk in central Mindelo and arrange taxis, a driver or a tour for places further away.
If Santo Antão is next, give its mountains and hiking routes their own days rather than absorbing them into the São Vicente schedule.
Travellers combining several islands should confirm current flights and ferry services before fixing accommodation around tight connections.
If you tell us how many days you have, the islands you want to visit and the kind of trip you prefer, our local team can organise the São Vicente part of your journey and coordinate accommodation, transfers and onward connections to Santo Antão or other Cape Verde islands.
