Mindelo is the cultural centre of São Vicente, but the island changes quickly once you leave the city.
Dry volcanic valleys lead towards fishing villages, broad Atlantic beaches and exposed headlands. Monte Verde rises above the island, the north coast opens towards Salamansa and Baía das Gatas, and the road east continues through Praia Grande towards the volcanic landscape around Calhau.
On the opposite side of São Vicente, São Pedro combines a long beach, strong Atlantic conditions, a coastal walk and one of the island’s best-known marine experiences: snorkelling with sea turtles.
São Vicente is compact enough to explore its main landscapes in a few hours, but the geography still matters. The most efficient route groups Monte Verde, Salamansa, Baía das Gatas, Praia Grande and Calhau together. São Pedro lies in another direction and is easier to enjoy as a separate half-day or an activity around an arrival or departure day.
This guide focuses on what to do outside Mindelo, which places combine naturally and where spending extra time can add something worthwhile to the trip.

Monte Verde is the highest point on São Vicente at approximately 774 metres.

Start with the View from Monte Verde
Monte Verde is a useful first stop because it gives the rest of São Vicente some geographical context.
From the high ground, you can look towards Mindelo and Porto Grande and across much of the island. In clear conditions, neighbouring islands may also be visible on the horizon.
The summit lies within Monte Verde Natural Park, where trade-wind moisture supports more vegetation than across much of São Vicente’s otherwise dry landscape.
A visit does not need to become a major hike.
Road access makes Monte Verde easy to include as a viewpoint on an island tour, while travellers who want to walk can spend longer exploring the mountain.
Visibility varies with cloud, haze and wind, so the panorama depends on conditions on the day.
From Monte Verde, continue towards Salamansa and the north coast rather than returning to Mindelo.
Stop in the Fishing Village of Salamansa
Salamansa lies on the north coast between Mindelo and Baía das Gatas.
The village and broad beach show a quieter side of São Vicente: fishing boats, open sand, Atlantic wind and relatively little tourism infrastructure.
Salamansa is also known for kitesurfing and other wind sports.
For most first-time visitors, a shorter stop is enough to see the village, walk along the beach and continue towards Baía das Gatas.
Swimming conditions vary with wind, waves and current, so assess the sea on the day rather than assuming every beach stop is suitable for swimming.
Spend Time at Baía das Gatas
Baía das Gatas is one of São Vicente’s best-known coastal areas.
The shape of the bay and rocky coastline creates a more sheltered section of water than many of the island’s exposed Atlantic beaches, making it a natural place to pause during the north-coast circuit.
Allow time for a walk around the bay, a beach stop or lunch rather than treating it only as a photo stop.
Baía das Gatas is also home to the Festival Internacional de Música da Baía das Gatas, held since 1984 and one of Cape Verde’s major music events.
If your visit coincides with the festival period, check dates, transport and accommodation well in advance because demand across São Vicente increases significantly.
Outside festival dates, the atmosphere is much quieter.
Continue along the Coast towards Praia Grande
From Baía das Gatas, the landscape opens further as the road continues towards the eastern side of São Vicente.
This part of the island is worth seeing for the journey itself.
Dry mountains, pale sand, dark volcanic formations and the Atlantic create a landscape very different from Mindelo.
Praia Grande is a natural stop along the way towards Calhau.
You can pause briefly for the beach and views or spend longer if the conditions invite a swim and your schedule allows it.
Explore Calhau and the Eastern Volcanic Landscape
Calhau is a small fishing settlement on São Vicente’s east coast.
The village sits among a striking combination of fishing boats, volcanic terrain, Atlantic coastline and extinct cones. In clear conditions, the uninhabited island of Santa Luzia can be visible offshore.
The Viana crater lies around four kilometres south of Calhau.
Calhau is worth visiting for the landscape surrounding the village as much as for the settlement itself.
The contrast between the dark volcanic ground, ocean and dry mountains helps explain the geology of São Vicente much more clearly than a city stay alone.
Calhau is also a natural final major stop on the main island circuit before returning towards Mindelo.
Add a Short Walk around Viana Volcano
Travellers who want some walking can extend the Calhau visit into the Viana area.
Viana is an extinct volcanic crater south of the village.
This is a relatively short volcanic outing rather than a major hiking day, making it easier to combine with an island tour than the longer mountain routes found on Santo Antão or Fogo.
The terrain is exposed, dry and rocky.
Carry water, use sun protection and consider the heat before adding the walk in the middle of the day.
If hiking is one of the main reasons for your Cape Verde trip, São Vicente offers useful shorter walks, while neighbouring Santo Antão provides a much larger network of mountain trails.
See Hiking in Cape Verde and How to Get to Santo Antão from São Vicente.
Visit São Pedro on a Separate Half-Day
São Pedro lies southwest of Mindelo, close to Cesária Évora International Airport.
Its position matters when planning the island.
It sits on the opposite side of São Vicente from the natural Monte Verde → Salamansa → Baía das Gatas → Praia Grande → Calhau circuit.
Adding São Pedro to that route is possible, but it means crossing more of the island and reduces the time available at the other stops.
São Pedro is easier to plan as:
- a separate half-day;
- an activity on an arrival or departure day;
- a dedicated marine excursion;
- a combination of beach and coastal walking.
The village has a long beach and is associated with fishing, wind sports, diving and snorkelling.
Snorkel with Sea Turtles at São Pedro
São Pedro is one of São Vicente’s best-known locations for encounters with sea turtles.
The shallow coastal waters are used for guided snorkelling experiences, and turtles are regularly observed in the area.
Book this activity with an experienced local operator rather than arranging it independently.
Choose an operator that:
- maintains an appropriate distance from the animals;
- avoids touching or handling turtles;
- does not encourage chasing or disturbing them;
- adapts the activity to sea conditions.
Wind, swell and currents can change even when the beach looks calm from shore, so local knowledge is important.
Add São Pedro Turtle Snorkelling to My Trip
We can arrange the experience with transfers from Mindelo or include it in a wider São Vicente programme.
Walk towards the Dona Amélia Lighthouse
São Pedro also offers one of São Vicente’s accessible coastal walks.
The São Pedro – Farol de Dona Amélia route is approximately 6 km and generally classified as easy.
The trail follows the exposed coastal landscape west of the village towards the lighthouse area.
It is a good option for travellers who want to walk on São Vicente without dedicating a full day to a mountain route.
Take water and sun protection, and expect wind and little shade.
The walk can be combined with time at São Pedro beach if daylight and conditions allow.
Choose Beaches by How You Want to Use Them
São Vicente has several beaches worth visiting, but they offer different experiences.
For a first trip, choose according to what you want from the stop.
Baía das Gatas fits naturally into the main island circuit and includes more sheltered water.
Salamansa is associated with wind, waves and kitesurfing.
São Pedro combines a large beach with wind sports, turtle experiences and the lighthouse walk.
Praia Grande and the Calhau coast add landscape and volcanic scenery to the eastern circuit.
If the priority is an easy beach close to the city, Laginha belongs to your Mindelo time and does not require an island tour.
See Best Beaches in Cape Verde for a wider comparison across the archipelago.
The Main São Vicente Highlights Circuit
For a first visit outside Mindelo, a practical route is:
Mindelo → Monte Verde → Salamansa → Baía das Gatas → Praia Grande → Calhau → Mindelo
This circuit combines:
- panoramic views from Monte Verde;
- a fishing village;
- the north coast;
- Baía das Gatas;
- Atlantic beaches;
- the volcanic landscape of eastern São Vicente.
The stops follow a logical geographical sequence, reducing unnecessary driving.
Viana can be added when you want a short volcanic walk and have enough time.
São Pedro is better kept separate when turtle snorkelling or the coastal walk is a priority.
São Vicente Island Tour – Discover the Best of the Island
Explore Monte Verde, Salamansa, Baía das Gatas, Praia Grande, Calhau and São Vicente’s volcanic landscapes on an approximately 5-hour island tour from Mindelo.
How Long to Allow for an Island Tour
Around 5 hours is enough for the principal São Vicente highlights:
Monte Verde → Salamansa → Baía das Gatas → Praia Grande → Calhau
That gives enough time to see the main landscapes and villages without turning every stop into a rushed photo opportunity.
Allow longer if you want to add:
- Viana Volcano;
- a leisurely lunch;
- swimming;
- longer beach stops;
- extended photography stops;
- a slower overall pace.
São Pedro is easier to plan as a separate half-day, particularly when combining:
São Pedro + turtle snorkelling
or:
São Pedro + Dona Amélia lighthouse walk
This gives you more flexibility than trying to force every attraction into one island circuit.
Ways to Explore São Vicente
The main sights outside Mindelo can be visited on a guided tour, with a private driver or independently by rental car.
Guided Island Tour
A guide adds context to the journey.
São Vicente’s dry landscape can appear sparse at first, but the fishing villages, volcanic geography, agriculture, coastline and local history become more meaningful with explanation.
A guided tour also removes the need to coordinate several point-to-point taxi journeys.
Taxi or Private Driver
A taxi or private driver is a good option when you already know which places you want to visit.
Agree on the route, waiting times and total price before starting, especially if the same driver will stay with you for several stops.
Rental Car
A rental car provides more independence and makes it easier to extend a beach stop or change the route during the day.
Check road conditions before leaving paved roads.
Although São Vicente is compact, stops on opposite sides of the island can add a surprising amount of driving if the route is poorly ordered.
Using an Extra Day: São Vicente and Santo Antão
If you are based in Mindelo and have one free day, exploring São Vicente avoids a ferry crossing and gives you Monte Verde, fishing villages, beaches and volcanic coastal landscapes within a compact route.
Santo Antão becomes the stronger choice when mountain hiking is a priority and you can give the island enough time beyond the ferry journey.
A day trip is possible, but staying overnight allows much more time for the valleys, villages and hiking routes.
If you have several days available, São Vicente and Santo Antão combine naturally within the same trip.
See São Vicente + Santo Antão: 7-Day Itinerary and How to Get to Santo Antão from São Vicente.
How Much Time Does São Vicente Need?
For a first trip, separate time in Mindelo from time exploring the rest of São Vicente.
A practical stay might include:
Day 1 — Mindelo
Explore the city, markets, waterfront, music and Laginha.
Day 2 — São Vicente highlights circuit
Spend around five hours visiting Monte Verde, Salamansa, Baía das Gatas, Praia Grande and Calhau, leaving the rest of the day flexible.
Day 3 — Optional São Pedro or Santo Antão
Choose turtle snorkelling, the lighthouse walk or continue by ferry to Santo Antão.
Travellers with less time can combine Mindelo and an island circuit over two days.
Those with more time can slow the pace, add beach time or use São Vicente as the gateway to Santo Antão.
For a broader overview of the destination, see our São Vicente Travel Guide.
Plan Your São Vicente Trip
São Vicente offers far more than Mindelo, but you do not need to visit every corner of the island in one day.
The main northeastern and eastern circuit can be explored in around five hours, leaving room to extend the tour when a longer lunch, beach time, Viana or additional stops matter to you.
São Pedro can then be added separately when turtle snorkelling, wind sports or a coastal walk are priorities.
Tell us:
- your travel dates;
- how long you are staying on São Vicente;
- whether you want beaches, viewpoints, villages, walking or marine activities;
- whether turtle snorkelling is important;
- whether you are continuing to Santo Antão;
- how many people are travelling.
We can organise a São Vicente island tour, private transport, turtle experience, airport transfers, accommodation, ferry connections and Santo Antão extension around the time available for your trip.
